Tom Hoffman
Tom and his wife, Melane, moved to the Ag Reserve in 1993 to a horse farm on Peach Tree Road, where they raised three children who share their love of the land, the countryside, and all creatures in it. Tom practiced energy and environmental law in Washington, D.C., until April 2025, when he retired. His career included stints at an environmental nonprofit, several national law firms, and an independent power company.
Tom was active in regional land stewardship issues even before he moved to the Ag Reserve. He co-founded the Peach Tree Water Coalition in 1999 to defend the water rights of the Peach Tree Road community. That effort led to the creation of Bucklodge Conservation Park.
In the early 2000s, Tom helped co-found the Montgomery Countryside Alliance and the Sugarloaf Conservancy—a land trust that protects farmland with easements that prevent development. Tom now serves as co-chair of the Conservancy’s board.
He was Chair of the Board of the BlackRock Center for the Arts from 2000 to 2004 and remains active at BlackRock. In 2024, Tom joined Montgomery County's Agricultural Preservation Advisory Board. He joined SCA’s board in 2025.
Tom and Melane are avid equestrians and enjoy traveling.
