ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Sugarloaf Citizens Association (SCA) is a nonprofit organization of volunteers founded in 1973. Our primary mission is to preserve and protect the Agricultural Reserve – the 93,000 acres of northern Montgomery County zoned in the 1980s for farming, land conservation, and open space. We also advocate for sound environmental stewardship and climate change policies in the Ag Reserve and for the county as a whole – for the benefit of all residents.

Our headquarters at Linden Farm on more than 150 acres in Dickerson, Maryland, is home to SCA's regenerative agriculture pilot program. In partnership with Montgomery County, we manage the farm and several buildings, including a beautifully restored historic Gothic Dairy Barn.

50 Years of Advocacy & Education

Over the last half-century, SCA has won legal battles that strengthened the right of citizens to petition the state over the environmental impact of large-scale energy and trash projects. Key achievements include:

  • Led the fight to defeat a new bridge over the Potomac River into the Ag Reserve because of concerns about the bridge's environmental impact.

  • Successfully advocated for the closure of the Dickerson coal-fired power plant.

  • Prevented a mega-church development at the intersection of Rt. 109 and 1-270.

  • Helped stop a gun range installation near Sugarloaf Mountain.

  • Urged Montgomery County to limit the Dickerson incinerator to only accept waste from within the County. We are now helping the county reinvent its trash management program, with one aim being shuttering the incinerator for good.
