County officials are this summer entering an active planning and decision phase of their multi-year effort to overhaul how the county disposes of its (your) trash. SCA is party to aspects of that initiative. Namely, we have some purview over the yard trim compost facility located in Dickerson. The county wants to start diverting food scraps from the trash stream and process them at that facility. Tossed-away food makes up almost 20% of the trash burned in the incinerator. SCA must approve the project. We strongly support food scrap composting, but await the county’s plans, including full disclosure of how it will impact the local community. SCA continues to push for closure of the incinerator as soon as possible after an alternative waste management system is chosen and launched.
