SCA members and friends, Season’s greetings! We have much to be thankful for as 2023 draws to a close. And much to remain vigilant about in 2024. A proposal in the County Council to permit overnight lodging on farms in the Ag Reserve has stirred debate. We oppose the proposal, which is drawing attention to the evolution of agritourism in the Ag Reserve. That’s a discussion worth having. The proposed reinvention of the Dickerson power plant property by its new owners remains in flux—as they seek permits. We have an ongoing dialogue with the company, Terra Innovations, and will continue to closely monitor their plans and the county’s response. Montgomery County has reengaged SCA and others in a detailed discussion about the future of the Dickerson trash incinerator and compost facility, and the county’s entire waste disposal system. This is a vital environmental and infrastructure issue. The Frederick County Council this month rejected new conservation zoning of almost 20,000 acres encompassing and to the east of Sugarloaf Mountain, after a three year process. Our fight to protect this area from dense commercial and housing development will continue. For another year, SCA has promoted farming and fostered progressive environmental stewardship in Montgomery County.
